When it comes to gluten free diets, there has been a lot of speculation as to whether or not people are taking it on simply to be part of the latest diet trend. Obviously, this is not the case with genuine intolerances to gluten, however, statistics have shown a significant rise in the number of people who are adopting a gluten-free lifestyle.
There is evidence that does suggest the gluten-free diet has become somewhat of a trend due to various celebrities and health professionals getting involved in the gluten debate. For example, when tennis star, Novak Djokovic revealed that he was on a gluten-free diet, and attributed it to his recent success, the number of people on gluten-free diets rose significantly, yet those with intolerances and illnesses like coeliac disease remained more or less the same. As was the case again when pop-star Miley Cyrus spoke publicly about her apparent gluten allergy and when actress Gwyneth Paltrow released a gluten-free cookbook. So yes, the gluten-free diet could be interpreted simply as a growing trend for most of its followers.
However, it is still important to note that because it could be seen as a trend that it is not devoid of benefits to those who are not affected by gluten as evidence suggests limiting gluten can help maintain a healthier diet.
